Tasmania🏔️🥾

Tasmania🏔️🥾

We were lucky enough to book a relocation camper van from Melbourne to Hobart for a few days. We flew from New Zealand to Melbourne, collected our van and drove straight to the ferry terminal. We chose a relocation where the ferry ticket was included, meaning it is paid for by the camper van company. However, this ferry ticket only covers the driver for the relocation. For me as the passenger, we had to book a separate walk on ticket, which cost $130 AUD for a recliner seat and was the cheapest option. Make sure that you book a relocation with this ferry ticket included, it will say on Imoova if it does or not, this way you will save money on the ferry for your camper van as it is a lot more expensive for a camper ticket than a walk on ticket. The ferry takes 12 hours and we got it overnight getting to Davenport at 7am. We then spent a week in Tasmania, which is enough time to explore the main sites, however, two weeks would be the perfect amount of time without rushing everything.

LAUNCESTON🚡

Cataract Gorge Reserve

Spend the morning in Launceston and go on the scenic, Worlds Longest Single Chairlift at Cataract Gorge Reserve. Walk round the gorge through the different walking trails, stopping at viewpoints and seeing a variety of animals and birds.

BAY OF FIRES🏖️

Spend a few days at the Bay of Fires and drive down the coast to explore the different gorgeous beaches:

    1. Binalong Bay, St. Helens
    2. Jeaneret Beach
    3. Cosy Corner North
    4. Swimcart Beach
    5. The Gardens
    6. Peron Dunes

BICHENO🦞

Continue driving down the coast to Bicheno stopping off wherever you want. Have a delicious meal at the Lobster Shack to try their fresh seafood dishes before going to see the Bicheno Blow Holes.

FREYCINET NATIONAL PARK🏞️

If you have time, spend at least a few days exploring Freycinet National Park and the different walking trails and beaches. The walks vary from different lengths and difficulty depending on your preference. If you are tight on time, you can spend just the day and do the main sites, however for more of an adventure spend two days or more. Some walks can take multiple days to do the circuit round the National Park, so if you like hiking you should definitely look into this!

    1. Wineglass Bay Lookout & Wineglass Bay Beach - main sight is to walk to the lookout where you can see Wineglass Bay and Hazards Beach. You then have the option to walk down to Wineglass Bay, which includes 1000 steps down to the beach.
    2. Mount Amos Lookout - another popular hike, but it can take up to 5 hours to complete and involves hiking up steep sides of the mountain to the top, worth it for the views though!
    3. Hazards Beach.

CRADLE MOUNTAIN🏔️

Spend a couple days here to explore Cradle Mountain, which is the most popular thing to do in Tasmania. It has multiple hiking routes that you can do varying from day trips to multiple day trips. We wish we had more time to explore here, but you can definitely do the main hike in a day if you are tight on time.

    1. Cradle Mountain Summit - main hike to the top and can take four to five hours to do. When we did the hike the weather was very temperamental going from raining to snowing so we didn’t want to risk getting stuck at the top and being unprepared. We wish we could have done this though!
    2. Marions Lookout - one of the main lookouts of the mountain and lake before the summit, which is what we did. If you do the summit, you will go past Marions lookout on the way to the top.
    3. Dove Lake Circuit - takes around an hour and a half to complete the loop and you can see the views of the lake and mountains from the bottom.
    4. Lake Lila - on your way down from Marion’s Lookout you will stop at different viewpoints over the this lake.

MARIA ISLAND🏝️

Do a day trip to Maria Island from Triabunna. We got the morning ferry which cost us $56.50 AUD each and spent the day exploring the island. You can walk around the whole island in a couple of hours or hire bicycles instead. We chose to walk to get our steps in and stopped at different spots to see the surrounding islands and cliffs. Two of the main things to see are the painted cliffs and wild wombats. There are also a couple beaches that you can spend the day at if the weather is good, we packed our own lunch, did some exploring and had it by the cliffs overlooking the beach.

    1. Darlington Probation Station - explore the convict era buildings, including the Coffee Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
    2. Painted Cliffs - has unique, colourful sandstone formations, best to see them at low tide.
    3. Fossil Cliffs - walk along the dramatic coastline and discover ancient fossils.
    4. Cycle round the island stopping at the different spots and beaches.

HOBART🏙️

Spend at least three days in Hobart to do everything. Hobart as the capital of Tasmania, has lots of shops and cafes and day trips to do. On the outskirts, if you are driving down from the coast, there are loads of gorgeous wineries to stop at as well.

MONA (Museum of Old and New Art)🏛️

Explore the MONA, which is a quirky museum combining contemporary and historic art. It costs $39 AUD and once you enter you are recommended to download their app. This app gives you details and meaning behind the different artwork, as you walk round the museum.

Mount Wellington and Mount Nelson🥾

Hike up to both Mount Wellington and Mount Nelson Lookout. The hike to Mount Wellington can take a few of hours to complete, whereas Mount Nelson you have the option to drive to the lookout instead of hiking. Both mountains are worth it to see gorgeous views over Hobart and Tasmania.

Bruny Island🏝️

Another day trip from Hobart is to Bruny Island. You can also camp and stay a night on the island as there are free campsites, which is what we did. For Bruny Island you can bring your own car and camper too. All you have to do is turn up at the port and you can pay for a ticket on the day. This is a lot cheaper than online and bringing our camper allowed us to drive around the island easily.

    1. Cape Bruny Lighthouse - visit Australia’s second oldest lighthouse for gorgeous views of the Southern Ocean.
    2. The Neck Lookout - walk up the neck lookout for incredible panoramic views over the island. You also might be lucky enough to see short-tailed shearwaters and wild little penguins who come onto the beach at dusk!
    3. Recommend to hike the Fluted Cape Circuit, which is a three hour walk along the coast with dramatic views of the surrounding cliffs and blue waters.
    4. Recommend South Bruny National Park, explore the different walking paths and enjoy the beaches like Cloudy Bay. You will also see the famous white wallabies.
    5. Bread Fridge - the bread fridge is on the main road from the pier. These fridges actually have fresh sourdough bread loafs, which cost $10 AUD each. We had to get a loaf because they looked that good!
    6. Indulge and taste the local fresh oysters at Get Shucked and try the cheese at Bruny Island Cheese Co and Whisky.
