Milos, Greece☀️
Milos is one of my favourite islands in Greece, famous for its dramatic volcanic landscapes, turquoise waters, and unique coastline. To get to Milos you can get the ferry directly from Athens to Adamas Port. We got a return ticket and spent a week in Milos, exploring the cute towns around the island. To get around the island, you can hire either mopeds or quad bikes, we went with a moped and got one through our hotel, then spent each day exploring the surrounding towns.
Adamantas
Adamantas is the main port town and centre of the island and where we got the ferry to, from Athens. The streets are packed with lively waterfront dining, perfect to watch the sunset, as well as loads of local boutiques and souvenir shops to browse at.
We stayed at the Orizontes Boutique Studios, which was a short taxi from the port. We had our own room and balcony, a shared pool that we could use and lots of different seating areas to relax and sunbathe on.
Plaka
One town to explore is Plaka, which is the historic capital of the island. It is a beautiful town, full of traditional, whitewashed houses and narrow cobblestone roads. You could spend the whole day walking around the town, browsing in the different local stalls, cafes and restaurants. To watch the sunset, walk up to the highest point of the island, which is Plaka Castle. Explore the ruins, and watch the sun begin to set from this prime spot.
Firiplaka Beach
Firiplaka Beach is one of the most popular and visually stunning beaches in Milos. It is famous for its long stretched, white sand beach, surrounded by dramatic and colourful volcanic cliffs. It also has a massive, naturally split rock formation, which creates natural archways, perfect to swim and snorkel around. We spent one day here, relaxing on the beach and swimming in the clear waters!
Sarakiniko Beach
Sarakiniko Beach is famous for its surreal, white volcanic rock formations that resemble a lunar landscape. The beach was formed by millions of years of wind, waves and volcanic eruptions, which created natural pools that you can swim in. Instead of sand, you will relax on the smooth rock dunes, that you can also jump from.
There are no trees or natural shade on the rocks, so bring an umbrella, sunscreen, and plenty of water. Because of its popularity, it gets very crowded, so arrive early in the morning or late in the afternoon to beat the crowds and the midday heat. It is also a prime spot to watch the sunset!
Firopótamos Beach
Firopótamos beach is a scenic, idyllic fishing village, located in a small sandy bay, surrounded by clear blue water and traditional fishermen’s houses. We spent the morning here driving through the incredible landscapes to relax on the beach before exploring other nearby towns.
Klima
Klima is Milos’s most famous traditional fishing village, known for its colourful, two-story boathouses, a row of them built directly on the water’s edge. We drove to Klima and spent the afternoon exploring the town.
Papafragkas Caves
The Papafragas Caves are a geological formation famous for their surrounding turquoise waters, towering volcanic cliffs and narrow sea channels. Papafragkas feature interconnected caves, including an enclose cave, which can only be reached by swimming and is pretty dangerous to get there. If the tide is low, you can reach the beach, which is hidden away inside the cliffside. If you are unable to get to the beach, climbing up the cliffs also offer beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding Angean Sea.
Food
Mosaic Milos, Plaka
Mosaic Milos, is a popular rooftop cafe and bar, located in Plaka. It is known for vibrant, boho-chic aesthetic, with decorative tiles and beanbag seating areas. From the rooftop, you can see views of the sea and is another prime spot to watch the sunset. During the day it is a cute cafe spot, which transitions into a sunset lounge and bar in the evening. It offers a variety of Mediterranean and Greek fusion dishes, we went all out and shared four dishes between us.
Hanabi Seaside Sushi & Fusion Cuisine, Pollonia
Hanabi is a popular, upscale sushi and Asian fusion restaurant, known for its stunning views on the waterfront, high quality sushi and relaxed, vibrant atmosphere. We popped here for lunch and shared two sushi rolls and dumplings.
Mangata Milos, Adamas
Mangata is a cute cafe and bar, right on the seafront in Adamas. It is a popular spot, known for its cool vibes and relaxed atmosphere. We passed this spot and decided to have dinner, sharing bruschetta, oysters and a small pizza between us. We were also lucky to watch a small sunset on the seafront as we ate.
Aragosta, Adamas
For our last night, we went to this highly rated Mediterranean restaurant and cocktail bar. It is known for its stunning waterfront views and delicious, creative dishes. As it was our last night, we went all out, ordering starters, mains and desserts. They are known for their fresh seafood dishes and handmade pasta, which were incredible.
Other things to do in Milos:
- Take a boat tour to Kleftiko to see the incredible white cliffs and Sea Caves. You can book either a half day or full day tour, and they take you different spots to explore the caves.
- Explore Tripiti town, a short drive from Plaka, famous for its panoramic sea views, Roman Amphitheatre ruins and Catacombs.
- Spend the day at Tsigrado Beach, another gorgeous beach, which has a secluded cave that you can climb down into by a ladder that leads onto the small beach. It’s a pretty small beach, so go early before it gets too crowded!
- Another town to visit is Pollonia, which is the second largest, most done up town on the island. It is known for its beautiful waterfront restaurants, sandy beaches and easy access for boat trips to nearby islands.
