Here are some restaurants and cafes that we went to when we were in Bolivia!
Olivia Restaurant, La Paz
We got stuck in La Paz because of the protests, so ended up staying for another three days. We decided to treat ourselves with a nice meal and we went to Olivia restaurant, which was in the heart of the Witches Market. It is a gorgeous restaurant, known for its delicious European and Bolivian fusion dishes, with their steaks being a huge favourite. The atmosphere of the restaurant is stylish and modern, perfect for a nice meal out with friends!
We got the Salmon Ceviche and Fish Tacos starters to share and then a main each, with drinks! For mains, the boys got steaks and we got different pasta dishes! I got the Pumpkin Sorrentinos and it was delicious. Pumpkin dishes in South America have become a huge favourite of mine, and they never disappoint. Molly got the Chicken Linguine, which she said was really good but quite oily. Aside from that, all portions were very generous and the overall cost of dinner was really good for what we got, highly recommend!
Typica, La Paz
Typica is a very popular, specialty coffee shop and cafe in La Paz. It has been rated number 33 on the top 100 best coffee shops of 2026 in the world, so of course we had to go. We went here three times because it was that good. Aside from their award winning coffees, they have a diverse menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner that are not only delicious but also budget-friendly.
The overall vibe of the cafe is a mixture of quirky and vintage interior. It has two levels of comfortable seating inside and a patio outside, both spaces are perfect to relax and work at. It also has a small shop inside, which sells vintage clothes and records.
SOMOS Coffee & Sucré Cafe, Sucre
SOMOS is a recognised coffee shop and pastry cafe in Sucre, known for their speciality coffees, artisan baked goods and cozy atmosphere. It is so good, that it was nominated as one of the 100 best coffee shops in South America.
Sucré is another cafe, which serves delicious coffee desserts, pastries, and ice cream. We spent a few mornings here getting our coffee in before Spanish School.
Terraza 625, Sucre
Terraza 625 is a gorgeous rooftop bar and restaurant in the Hotel Parador Santa María La Real. This is the perfect place to watch the sunset and see panoramic views of the city’s colonial rooftops and architecture. We spent one evening here playing cards and drinking good wine!
El Patio Saleñeria, Sucre
This restaurant is renowned for serving traditional, delicious salteñas, a juicy, sweet and savoury Bolivian baked empanada. They serve hot beef, chicken and vegetarian salteñas and they are the most delicious pastries we have ever had. Salteñas have been our favourite street food out of all of South America, so we had to come to a restaurant known for theirs! The restaurant is inside a two story historic, colonial building with a gorgeous outdoor courtyard. We spent the afternoon here after finishing Spanish School, enjoying the sunshine and eating good food.

Going to a curry restaurant is very popular in La Paz. You are spoilt for choice, with loads of different places to try. We went to New Delhi, which was recommended to us and it didn’t disappoint! We got four mains to share with rice, naan and salad and it was incredible and so cheap for what we got. Highly recommend! - Street Food, Bakery, Sucre (middle picture)
There are so many street food stalls that you can buy local Bolivian food, like salteñas, pastries and sweet treats. - The Lucky Llama, La Paz (last picture)
A really nice bar in La Paz, perfect place for a social drink with other backpackers and where you can watch different sports matches.
Fresh Markets:
There are so many huge markets around Bolivia, that most places you stop at will have a food market. These markets will have stalls of different local, traditional Bolivian meals, fresh fruit and juices, vegetables etc. These food markets offer all sorts of dishes and they are incredibly cheap with generous portions!
